Knew it from the start...

Please give a warm welcome to Sheryl! She is a long time Tiny TreeHugger customer and a guest blogger. She keeps busy spending as much time as possible with her little girl before she goes back to work, knitting for her friends, family and etsy shop. She is also a zombie enthusiast. Her words are her own and were not influenced by us in any way... Thanks so much for your blog contribution Sheryl :)

Between my husband and I, there has never been a question that we would use cloth diapers. We never really had a conversation about it or had to convince each other on the merits. We were also in complete agreement that using a cloth diaper service was not for us. We didn’t, and still don’t, see how doing an extra load of laundry every few days can be considered too much work.

I started researching cloth diapers and became very confused and overwhelmed by the huge variety of diapers out there and I didn’t know what anything meant. AIO, pocket, prefold, all-in-two, fitted, one size diapers, etc. It was like there was a whole new language and I was incapable of understanding it! Eventually I came across the Tiny Tree Hugger website. I read their advice and was still very confused but I liked the design of their site so I contacted them. I wasn’t able to make it to an All About Cloth night so they invited me to come over the next day and learn about the diapers.

My husband and I wanted something that was relatively easy to use, something that did not take forever to dry because our dryer isn’t the best, and something that is cost efficient. I very quickly fell in love with the Apple Cheeks pocket system. It has inserts that are separate from the waterproof covers so they dry much fast than an all-in-one system. They also seemed a lot simpler to use than pre-folds. The price point was between the two systems as well. I ordered a starter kit right there and then because I wanted to have everything ready before the baby arrived. I wanted to use cloth diapers right from the start! Well, you know what they say about best laid plans...I got my diapers a good month before my due date and then went into labour first thing the next day! Since my baby was premature, she was too small for the cloth diapers and I had to use disposables for the first month. Since we’ve put her in cloth, she has barely worn a disposable diaper. We found that they worked MUCH better at keeping the baby poop in the diaper than the disposables. We had many blowouts before we switched and my friends using disposables always complained about blowouts.

We don’t actually use the pockets in the diapers. We fold the liner and place them over the pocket and put a flushable liner over that during the day time, and a fleece liner at night to help draw the moisture away since she wears it so long. This way, we can re-use our covers for more than once change.  We have 2 covers on the go: the one she is wearing, and the one she was wearing that we will change her into next. We reuse them for a few changes and then put them in the wash. This way, we have more inserts than covers which helps save money as well.

There was a time when my diapers started to stink and there was so much confusing advice on the internet. I contacted Pam J and she was so great at troubleshooting my diaper problems. Pam C and Pam J are great to buy from and have excellent customer service skills. They are very prompt at answering emails, and use an out of office reply when they are unable to do so. When you make an order for local pick up, they contact you right away to co-ordinate a pick up time with you. They are very helpful and knowledgeable about cloth diapering.

The only time we wavered was when we were first starting solids. As those of you with babies know, the only word I can use to describe the baby poop around that time is “special”. We started using flushable liners and they made poopy diaper changes a lot more pleasant – swishing or dunking the diapers was not something I was willing to do!

I spent a good portion of my summer at the family cottage and my commitment to cloth didn’t stop, despite the fact that we don’t have a washer or dryer there. Every 3 to 4 days I would go to Winnipeg Beach and use the Laundromat to wash the diapers, and hang them to dry back at the cottage.

Our baby is almost a year old now and our love of cloth diapers is just as strong as it ever was. I am heading back to work in January and we’ve managed to find a daycare that will do cloth for us. Another great thing about the pocket diapers is that you can use them as an all-in-one for daycare situations because it is just as easy for them to change as a disposable diaper.

Here are some of the tips I’ve learned while cloth diapering:
-          If you want to use a cream, make sure you use a flushable liner otherwise it could cause your diaper to stink or repel.
-          You need to change your baby more often than parents who use disposable diapers, but I find that parents sometimes leave their babies in disposable diapers too long.
-          The sun works like magic at getting poo stains out diapers and clothes.
-          Your baby will grow out of clothes faster using cloth diapers due to the bulk of the cloth.
-          It is very easy to use cloth overnight – just make sure you have some 3 layer inserts, or at least a 2 layer insert with a booster.
-          When your baby starts on solids, flushable liners will be your best friend.
-          Do not buy laundry detergent that from the grocery store or pharmacy that says it is ok for cloth diapers, you want to make sure that your detergent is designed for cloth diapers an won’t leave any residue behind. The Laundry Tarts detergent is awesome!
-          We hang our covers to dry.
-          Whatever system you use, try different brands – you will find you like different features about them.
-          Be careful doing laundry if you have Velcro diapers – make sure you Velcro tabs are covered so you don’t get them caught on everything.
-          Don’t let others try to talk you out of cloth diapering by telling you that it is more expensive or it is too much work. We have saved so much more many than if we were using disposables, and an extra load of laundry every few days is not that much work.
-          You have to find a system that works for you, because if you don’t like it you may not stick with it.
-          I find that stripping my diapers every few months leaves them in the most absorbent condition.
-          For customer service, nobody beats Pam C and Pam J.

Knickernappies Giveaway! [now closed]

We are so happy to team up with Knickernappies this month to giveaway a sized pocket diaper with loopydo insert!  This marks our FIRST blog giveaway. One of many :)

Three years ago when I was first introduced to cloth diapering a small Knickernappies pocket diaper was in the pocket package I had purchased. This was my FIRST package of diapers I bought, before baby was even here!  I took that brave step to see which diaper(s) I would like and which would fit well for my little baby. Never looked back...

This Knickernappies diaper quickly became my go-to 'grab it' first diaper then I bought a few more to compliment it.  It was trim, slim and not too bulky!
Of course, you need something to put into the cloth diaper, the absorbent part.  Well, the loopydo insert is a perfect match!  I usually don't like microfiber as a stand alone insert, but when it is paired with the hemp to make the loopydo insert - WOW. It is super absorbent.  The microfiber is the quick absorber, while the hemp absorbs more over a longer period. So, a perfect pair!!  The fact that it's sewn as a loop of fabric means that it dries quicker in the dryer.

Buy it!
Knickernappies Pocket Diapers are only $18; a Loopydo Insert is $7.95.
When you buy 3 Pocket Diapers it is just $34, add 3 Loopydo Inserts $22 = $56.
When you buy 6 Pocket Diapers it is just $85, add 6 Loopydo Inserts $45  = $130.
Or 12 Pocket Diapers for $180, add 12 Loopydo Inserts for $85 = $265.

Win it!
Simply enter by commenting below with your favorite color of Knickernappies diaper. Sorry this contest eligible Canadians only. Contest closes November 2nd, 2010 10pm CST.

Follow, fan, subscribe, follow.

Trying to decode what it all means...

What do you do to stay connected with us?  There are many options to stay connected & in the know with Tiny TreeHugger.  Let me explain a little.

Our blog is connected to twitter...
Our facebook fanpage is connected to twitter...
Both of these will send out auto repeats with links of what was posted on the blog or facebook

If you subscribe to our blog via email you will get an email of the post that was created.  And if you follow via google friend connect or google reader you get the post in your dashboard or in reader!

PHEW.  I think that's it. At least that's all that I can comprehend for now...

So which one was it that you stay connected with us again?

Each one has it's benefits but if I were to choose two myself I would choose the email subscribe and facebook.  Between that and our homepage, THAT is how you will get the latest and greatest and not miss it :)  [I know for myself if there is something to announce, facebook is the fastest way to get it out there! Everything else takes a tad longer.]

Oh and have I mentioned we have 499 facebook followers?  That's pretty awesome. At 500 we are doing a giveaway.  At 50 Google Friend Connect followers we will have another giveaway. And who doesn't like free swag?!?

Fluffy butts for beginners - Part I

written by Lisa for Tiny TreeHugger

In a previous post on my blog, Conversion story, I wrote about how our family came to choose the cloth diapering option. We were on the fence for a while, and one of the most difficult parts about deciding to switch from disposables was the factor of the unknown. I didn't have any real experience with cloth, and I didn't have any friends who were doing it.  Because of that, disposable diapering was an automatic choice for us in the beginning.  Even when I did consider using cloth I had no real idea what it would be like, and I was afraid we would invest the money, hate it, and hear "I told you so" for the rest of our days.

This is for all those parents who are feeling exactly like that right now. If you can't imagine what the day to day of cloth diapering will look like (and I really had no clue), let me be that 'friend who cloth diapers' for you.  Come spy on our diaper changes, and snoop in my laundry room.  Satisfy your curiousity, and get yourself in a better place to make that choice.

I'd like to start off with a bit of a disclaimer.   There are many ways to cloth diaper.  In our family, we use one-size pocket diapers, and store our diapers in a laundry bag with a waterproof lining, commonly referred to as a wet bag.  If you are reading this as a veteran cloth diaperer, I may describe diapering a little differently than what you may do.  That's cool.  This is what works for us.

So, where to begin?  The first thing to realize about cloth diapering is that once you are using them, diapers are always in a cycle of clean diaper, to baby-wearing-diaper, to dirty diaper, to laundry day. This post describes the first 3 parts of that cycle. Fluffy butts - Part II will talk about laundry, storage, and using your cloth diapers away from home.

We'll start the diaper cycle with clean diapers. I mean, those are the best kind anyway, right? So let's say you have your clean diapers, folded and ready to go, sitting in a laundry basket, and your baby is ready to be diapered.

Diapering your baby

Pocket diapers like I use are easy to diaper with. They go on just like disposables, and close with either velcro or snaps. I like snaps, because the diapers won't "chain" together in the wash, like velcro ones tend to, but velcro is more adjustable, so there are advantages to either choice.

Thanks to my 80's childhood, the classic "My Buddy" is going to be our baby today, just to keep this post as clean as possible. ;-)

Lay baby on top of an open clean diaper,
fold it up and over baby,

and do up the snaps, first the right side and then the left (because the right flap has snap "receivers" so you can make it as tight as you need to).
Voila! One cloth diapered baby, comfy-cozy.

Changing Diapers

During the daytime, I generally change diapers every few hours, or whenever there is a dirty diaper, which I change just as soon as it is discovered. When you go to change a wet diaper, just open the snaps and replace the wet diaper with a clean one.  You can wipe and dry baby, if that is what you are used to. Then turn the diaper so that the opening between the fleece and the waterproof shell points down, and pull the inserts out of the diaper, to get the diaper ready to wash.

This photo shows a diaper with the inserts partially pulled out, so you can get the idea.

Pull the inserts all the way out, and lay them on top of the waterproof shell in your hand (pic on the left). This minimizes the amount that you actually have to touch the wet inserts. Fold the diaper cover shut (pic on the right), and you are ready to store it until laundry day.

"Sure," you might be thinking. "That's wet diapers. If all diapers were just wet, this wouldn't be that difficult of a choice. Get to the disgusting stuff."

Well, with a dirty diaper, there are just a few extra steps, and the first step is not much different from dealing with a dirty disposable. Just like with disposables, you will have to clean baby before replacing the diaper. Cloth diapers usually mean cloth wipes. I use baby washcloths, the cheapest I can find, and just keep a stash of 30 or so folded in a container in my diaper change area.

Make your cloth wipes wet with warm water from the tap, and away you go.  Even babysitters have commented to me that cloth wipes are far better than slippery disposable wipes for wiping away poo, and clean cloths don't leave anything extra on baby's skin (like perfumes or lotions that can irritation).  Still, if you are hooked on disposable wipes, you can use the flushable kind, and toss them into the toilet when you are done.

Once baby is clean and rediapered, you are left with the dirty diapers and wipes.  At this point with a disposable, you tie it up and toss it in the trash until garbage day, when it gets trucked off to the local landfill, along with all the other dirty disposables in your area.  That is a lot of human waste incubating in plastic at our dumps. And people say cloth diapering is gross.

Getting a dirty diaper ready for the laundry pile is really not that bad. Turn the diaper pocket opening down, and pull the inserts out above the toilet. Throw them directly into the laundry, or leave them for a minute in the sink or on your change pad. If you have an older child, another great place for anything dirty is an empty potty.

When the diaper's waterproof shell is empty, turn it upside down above the toilet. If you fold it in half, dirty side out, you can hold onto just the diaper tabs and your hands never need touch the waste or the toilet water.  Holding onto the top and bottom of the folded diaper, dunk the dirty part of the diaper in the toilet water. Swish the diaper in the water a few times, and most of the waste will fall off into the water, ready to be flushed away. What's left can go into your laundry bag, along with the inserts and cloth wipes from this diaper change.  Wash your hands, and you are all done.

That takes care of everything your babysitter will ever need to know about using cloth diapers. Of course, we know that as the parent there is still the issue of dirty laundry to deal with. Also, some people might feel comfortable cloth diapering at home, but don't know how they will do it with baby at the mall, or at grandma's house. In my next post, I will talk about washing diapers, and diapering on the go.

Tiny TreeHugger Editor's note:
Most velcro diapers also have laundry tabs to fold over so they don't chain together!

Some diapers like the AppleCheeks and Sweet Peas are made so the inserts come out with the agitation in the wash! No need to pull the insert out.

Also - exclusively breastfed baby poop is water soluble, so no need to put in the toilet, just make sure there is a first rinse in your wash cycle before the hot wash with soap!  Many don't swish in the toilet, as there are diaper sprayers or flushable liners that can be used...

Restocked & NEW - Aug28/10

Summer & guests...

August wrap-up ramblings...

There are quite a few things going on around the PamJ and PamC households lately! A busy summer means - packing to go to the cabin or camping, various trips here and there including seeing the world's largest dinosaur, unpacking and catching up with laundry, emails, potty training in the PamC household, black eyes and glued cheeks in the PamJ household... and SO much more.

The excitement really never ends!  And I look back and wonder why August is almost over, especially when we have only been to the beach ONCE this year. OR was it twice?  Either way, I have still not been brave enough to try that on my own without the darling husband around.

For a Tiny TreeHugger update - we are going to start trying to update the blog with all the NEW and restocked products that come into our shop. This is to de-clutter our homepage and to also inform YOU of what is coming in!  The link on our homepage will be attached to a label on our blog 'newANDrestocked'...  watch for it!

We are also looking for a few more guest blog contributors - please email info at tinytreehuggerdiapers dot com if interested.  If you have any topic ideas you would like to see covered, feel free to let us know as well!  Typically we want to keep it related to cloth diapers, babywearing, or anything related to what we carry in our store. So be specific!

Recommendations for starting cloth?

We are 'taking it to the streets' so to speak and asking YOU the question:

What one recommendation would you give someone just starting out with cloth?

A Twitter follower says: @tiny_treehugger try a variety of styles first to see what fits best. Friends with cloth stashes who lend them out help too :)

PamJ says: don't give up! it is something that you either love or you don't & it may take longer than a day to find the love for it, if you don't feel it yet...

PamC says: You don't have to commit to doing cloth full-time right away.  If you're not totally comfortable with it, you can just do it during the day, or while you're at home, or whatever works best for you.  Using a mix of cloth and disposables is okay, if that's what works.  It's better than nothing.

What is your answer?

Streamlining

Here at Tiny TreeHugger, we strive to have plenty of diapers in stock, as well as a wide selection of brands and types of diapers for you to choose from.  However, it isn't always possible to do both, and so we will be streamlining our selection slightly.  We've been in business for about a year now, and we've discovered what's popular and what's not so popular.  So, in the hopes of being able to bring you more of the diapers you love, we've decided to stop stocking 2 diapers - the Knickernappies One Size diaper, and the Happy Heinys One Size diaper (both the aplix and snap closures).  Our current stock of both diapers is now 10% off, so now is your chance to grab the last few of these diapers at a great deal (the Happy Heinys snap closures are already sold out though).  Both of these diapers will be available for purchase in the future by special order, but we will require a pre-paid order of at least 6 diapers (which coincidentally qualifies you for our 5% discount!), and they will take about 3-4 weeks to arrive.

We want to make our customers happy - if you think we should continue to stock these diapers, let us know!!  If we find that there is a greater demand for them, we will certainly bring them back.
